The concept originates from geography and urban studies, based on the thesis that globalization has created a hierarchy of strategic geographic locations with varying degrees of influence. I argue that if we are to make progress in articulating the connection between segmentation theory and the operation of local labour markets, then we need to be more rigorous in our conceptual distinction between ’local’, ’regional’ and ’spatial’ labour markets, and to state as unambiguously as possible the ways in which our understanding of labour markets in their geographic context is likely to be enhanced by the application of segmentation theory. ![]()
